Solar panels, home batteries and charging stations – what about insurance?
Sustainable living is here to stay. More and more homes are getting solar panels, charging stations and even home batteries. Logical choices – good for your wallet and the climate. But what about insurance? Do you have to register these sustainable solutions separately, or is it all arranged as standard? In this blog you can read how it works and I will give you practical tips for your situation.
Solar panels, charging stations and home batteries: simply included in the insurance
At Bouvy Advies we ensure that your sustainable solutions such as solar panels, charging stations for your electric car, home batteries, solar boilers and heat pumps are well insured. In most modern home insurance policies, these components are considered a permanent part of your home and are covered by the building insurance. You usually do not have to register them separately or pay extra premium.
What exactly is insured?
- Damage due to fire, storm, theft and other events: Solar panels, charging stations and home batteries are generally insured against the usual risks such as fire, explosion, storm, lightning, theft and vandalism.
- Also damage during renovation: If you are going to renovate or make it more sustainable, these components are usually also insured. Be careful when installing yourself: damage due to installation errors is often covered to a limited extent. If the installation was done by a company, you can hold them liable for damage due to an error.
- Underinsurance guarantee: Many insurers offer a guarantee against underinsurance if you periodically fill in the value meter together with your advisor. Interim adjustments, such as installing solar panels or a charging station, are then automatically included in the insurance.
What should you pay attention to?
- Install it yourself? Damage caused by your own assembly or installation is usually covered to a limited extent. If you have the installation carried out by a recognised company, you are better protected in the event of damage.
- Apartment or rental property? If you live in an apartment, the building insurance is often via the VvE. In that case, a charging station can sometimes be co-insured via the owner's interest on your home contents insurance. In the case of a rental property, you can have a charging station co-insured via the tenant's interest on the home contents insurance.
- Reporting is not mandatory, but it is smart! You usually do not have to report sustainable adjustments, but it is wise to inform your advisor. This way the value meter remains up to date and you prevent discussion in case of damage or sale of the house.
Finally
Sustainable living is becoming increasingly normal – and fortunately, good insurance is too. Solar panels, charging stations and home batteries are usually included as standard insurance, without any hassle.
